Thursday* - May 9th, 2013

Topic: "Concrete Evaluation and Repair Field Work at Important Historic Sites: Normandy, France and Alcatraz Island"
This presentation will include discussion of the reinforced concrete bunkers that were constructed as part of Hitler's Atlantic Wall defensive campaign and the cliff that extends approximately 100 feet below the bunkers. Advanced testing methods have been utilized to evaluate the progressive distress and physical condition of the concrete bunkers as affected by age and the chloride-rich marine environment. The cliffs have been stabilized by means of concrete micro piles, soil nailing, shotcrete and decorative concrete finishes. Historically significant concrete structures on Alcatraz Island, which is a national historic landmark, have been evaluated and aesthetic repairs performed. Unique and highly specialized approach to decorative treatment of repaired concrete surfaces has been developed that results in complete blending with the surrounding historic concrete.
Presented by Dr. Tanya Komas, Associate Professor - California State University, Chico, California
